Bik Een Part I

After my divorce, the two girls and I lived like nomads, moving from place to place. First we stayed with Auntie Yah on the third floor of a shoplot. It was a twenty by twelve studio and had a twenty by ten balcony overlooking a hugh magnificent tree. Inas told me earnestly she saw fairies flitting from branch to branch in the mornings. On occasions, the girls had a hot bath on that balcony under the stars! Iman loved our studio room, she called it the penthouse. But soon after, the landlord increased the rent so we found a 2-bedroom apartment on a hill for the same price. We slept in one twin bed and watched tv on a 9" b/w tv, and Tok Yah and her son, Shahrul stayed in the other room.

All the while, the girls went to stay with a trusted family babysitter, Auntie Fauziah, after school. She lived a few houses away from, my mother, the girls' Tok Wan. If I was working late, Tok Wan would pick the girls up. It was a great arrangement for Auntie Fauziah was the best of babysisters. She had 6 daughters of her own who all grew up to be lovely girls, she was strict and spoke the loveliest English in the neighbourhood, after Tok Wan of course. The girls loved her.
Rudi and I were married in 2000. We continued to stay in the apartment on the fourth floor after Aunty Yah moved to Terengganu. Then I was in the family way, with Irani. Rudi did not like the prospect of me walking up the stairs and him having to carry Iman and Inas up 4 floors up after a long day's work if they were asleep so we looked for a new house. And finally 2 house moves later, we decided that getting a place of our own was the best solution.

So we did, but we had to wait another two years before we could move in. Then in 2006, we got the green light. It was daunting, moving so far away from Tok Wan and Auntie Fauziah, and all that seemed familiar. By then, Irani and Ilena had made us a family of six. After having Auntie Fauziah for 6 contented years, it was tough trying to trust another to care for the girls.
Finally, a friend suggested a maid. Not just any maid - Bik Een had just returned from Arab Saudi, and came highly recommended. Frankly, I was desperate. So we filled in all applications and waited patiently for Bik Een to arrive.

Have you watched the movie Nanny Mc Phee? We dedicate that movie to our Bik Een. In fact we took Bik to see that movie in the theatre.

To be continued...

A Wizarding World Of Harry Potter Dream

Inas was busy planning a trip to the WWOHP with Iman.

Here is her budget plan so far:

Destination: Universal Themepark (WWOHP)
Hotel: Wingate By Windham

Budget Sheet (Per person)

Airplane ticket: RM5000 ($1500)
Accomodation: 5 days (2 Queen Beds Room) ($700 per room) ($175/RM615 per person)
Themepark tickets: 4 days ($150/RM525 per person)
Shopping: ($1000/RM3500) ($250/RM875 per day at the themepark)
_________________________________________________
Total: $2825 (RM9888-RM10000)
24 months of payment (RM1000-RM550): RM10800 ($3086)

They plan to work at Borders part-time for two years saving RM450 a month.

Frankly, I was not this industrious at this age.

I was oogling the cute gymnasts in our Selangor team and cramming for Perdagangan miserably. The concept of budget and profit and loss accounts were just subjects to pass in school.

Watermelon Day

Our Ghost Chair in the garden looks lonely...
Irani comes to eat her watermelon...
Yummy!
Oops..watermelon seeds...
Digging in!

Later, the girls played with Kak Ngah's fans in the living room...

Nina Bobo

Nina Bobo ooohhh Nina Bobo
Kaluai Ikesha digigit nyamuk
Mari ...
Ikesha Ilena Irani Inas Iman
Hi Anakku sayang...
Marilah Ikesha... anakku sayang

Repeated with other daughters' names

Nina Bobo is the lullaby all of us in our family grew up with. My mother sang it to me when I was a baby. presumably because she called me Nina. Then she continued to sing it to all my sisters and brother.

The tradition stuck and I sang Nina Bobo to all my daughters. Today Ikesha sang her own version...

Nina Bobo oooohhh Nina Bobo
Kaluai Puan Zalina makku sayang...

I couldn't help but smile in the dark...

How do you know he loves you...

Rudi had to go back to Rantau Panjang for family matters.

Secret confession: I love it when he goes away once in a while. He suddenly becomes very attentive just before he leaves.

He makes sure the fuel tank is full, the smart-tag is topped up. My handphone credit is suddenly uploaded [I hate bills...so I use pre-paid. Never bothered to change to post-paid] There's lots and lots of fruits in the house for the girls.

And best of all, he will hug me in public [the guy is very shy...]

TO THE BEACH

It was to be the busiest week in June with family functions to attend, visitors from Singapore and the World Cup season upon us. And yet the school holidays are here and the girls have been working so hard at their exams.

So we quietly slipped away before the hectic weekend for two days at the beach in heavanly Pangkor.

Best family movie for June - I guess it must be Prince Of Persia.

Now, it is going to be busy busy busy again until July. Just in time to wind down together and catch Nanny Mc Phee - The Big Bang before the onslought of exams come around again.

PANIC ON JALAN DUTA

It is school exam week. That means I hurry home at soon as I can so that I can reach home in time to spend a good one hour or so on revisions with the kids. That means I brave the KL rush hour traffic alone as Rudy would have one activity or the other to attend to in the evening. Yesterday, he had his French classes at L'aaliance Francaise.

It was 6.58pm. It was the usual Thursday night crawl as I left Jalan Parlimen to make my way into Jalan Duta. Bumper to bumper.

Suddenly the radio petered out. The lights started blinking. I had a sinking feeling I had long forgotten and a glimpse of the fading lights on the dashboard. The car sputtered, jerked and finally stopped.

I panicked. Then took a deep breath. Put on the hazard lights. And dialled the hand-phone for Rudi [what did people do in this situation before hand-phones existed?] As the phone rang, I looked out my window and saw the face of an old friend, Mr Sani Mah waving frantically at me! He had just left the Lake Club when he saw my black Savvy sandwiched between a sea of assorted vehicles. I must admit it was quite scary.

Mr Mah stopped his car. Thankfully, two others stopped by too and helped pushed the car to a safer area within the red divider area that separated Jalan Duta and Mahameru. Streaks of lightning followed by thunder announced the KL's signature heavy rain.

Rudi took 15 minutes to arrive in our NAZA - amazing on the jam-packed road. His collagues from MAA arrived 2 minutes later in their repair truck and opened their bonnet over the Savvy's engine. After trying out various measures, they concluded that the car would have to be towed away for now.

I thanked Mr Mah - if it were not for him I would have been much more a wreck rather than the calm person I was, and he went on his way.

The tow truck arrived a good 20 minutes later from Jinjang - so Rudi and I kept calm by reading each other the papers and listening to the radio. Somehow, we managed to ignore the humdrum of cars outside.

As we headed home for the night, I thought to myself, that wasn't too bad...and thanked God that all ended on a good note.

Arrived home to see all homework by Irani, Ilena and Ikesha carefully laid out on the dining table for me to check.

The little pleasures of life make everything worthwhile and the difficulties - bearable.
